Former Valley firefighter sentenced for sexual offenses in Portage County

RAVENNA, Ohio - A former firefighter with the Springfield Township Fire Department who pleaded guilty to sexual offenses in Portage County learned his fate on Monday.
An employee with Judge Becky Doherty's Court in Portage County tells 21 News that 29-year-old Brian Swansiger was sentenced to one year in prison on charges of gross sexual imposition and aggravated assault.
He must also register as a sex offender.
The charges stem from an incident that occurred on New Year's Day in 2024 and involved a woman whom Swansiger had met on a dating app.
Police said the two agreed not to have sexual contact on the first date, but Swansiger inappropriately touched the woman, exposed himself to her and asked her to perform a sexual act on him.
Furthermore, Swansiger drove the woman to a more secluded area where the two had unprotected sex. The woman told police she "gave in to make him stop" because she did not feel safe telling him no.
This is one of two cases against Swansiger, with the second one currently pending in Mahoning County. Swansiger is due back in court for a pretrial hearing on April 9, and his trial is currently set for June 8.
Swansiger was originally accused in Mahoning County of assaulting a woman he had met on a dating app after she invited him to her home to watch movies in 2018.
While a grand jury initially declined to indict Swansiger, the case was reopened in 2025 with even more charges stemming from another alleged incident in 2020.
Swansiger has been on unpaid administrative leave from the department since the fall of 2023.
