NILES - The case of a Southington Township firefighter who is facing a felonious assault charge is now in the hands of a Trumbull County grand jury.

A Niles Municipal Court employee tells 21 News that the case of 26-year-old Sherry Alexander has been bound over to the Trumbull County Common Pleas Court after Alexander waived his right to a preliminary hearing on Monday.

It is there that a grand jury will decide whether or not there is enough evidence to indict Alexander on the charge against him.

The charge stems from an incident that occurred on Wednesday, March 4, when Alexander and his girlfriend were driving on Robbins Avenue in Niles before parking the car at a restaurant in McKinley Heights.

Police say Alexander got out of the vehicle and threw rocks and a side rear-view mirror at it to break the glass. Police say the victim was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Alexander has been placed on leave by the Southington Township Fire Department following the incident.
