East High School JROTC Cadets earn high honors at Drill Competition

YOUNGSTOWN - At East High School in Youngstown on Saturday, JROTC Cadets from around the region competed in the annual Drill Competition.
Over 140 Cadets faced off to showcase precision, leadership, teamwork, academic skills and more.
Schools represented at the competition included East High School, Perry High School, Kenmore Garfield High School and Canton McKinley High School.
Dr. Joe Alessi, the Senior Army Instructor at East High School, said this event gives Cadets the opportunity to present what they have learned in the program, while becoming a better individual and teammate.
"JROTC is about motivating young people to become better citizens for the United States. It's not a recruiting tool for the military whatsoever. What we try to teach them is citizenship, along with the Army values," said Dr. Alessi.
East High School's JROTC Cadets took home first place overall, and first place in Varsity Color Guard, LET 1 Color Guard, Varsity Unarmed Drill, LET 1 Unarmed Drill, Squad Armed Drill and Raider Challenge. In the Academic Challenge, East High School JROTC Cadets placed third.
Additionally, in the Individual Knockout event, East High School students swept the podium, with Savion Robinson winning first place, Luis Vazquez second, and Omar Sanchez third.
