A $115.7 million reconstruction project impacting Interstate 80 in Mercer County, Pennsylvania, is set to begin again on March 17, 2026.

According to a news release from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), the reconstruction project includes major improvements to the roadway from the Ohio state line to mile marker five, including:

  • Milling
  • Asphalt and concrete paving
  • Concrete patching
  • Drainage
  • Guiderail upgrades
  • Right-of-way fencing
  • Concrete curbing
  • Topsoil
  • Seeding and mulching
  • Highway lighting
  • Signing
  • Highway markers line painting
  • Permanent digital messaging boards

The work also includes repairs to five bridges, including the replacement and widening of a bridge in Shenango Township over Route 318.

The project began in 2025 and is expected to be completed in 2027.

According to the release, phase two of the project will be completed in 2026. This would include the construction of the median and westbound portion of the bridge over Route 318, along with the reconstruction and resurfacing work on several areas of the roadway.

Construction is expected to pick back up again on March 16, weather permitting.

Drivers are advised to expect short-term lane closures as the project restarts. A long-term traffic shift for the westbound and eastbound lanes is anticipated to begin in late April.

Motorists are encouraged to visit the 511PA website for information on traffic delays, warnings and impacts.

The project costs $115,680,680, which is being paid completely by federal funds. The contractor is Glen O. Hawbaker of State College, Pennsylvania.
