Laid-off Ultium Cells workers' return to work could be delayed due to low demand

LORDSTOWN, Ohio - The return to work for hundreds of laid-off Ultium Cells employees in Lordstown could be delayed, according to a representative in the union.
Back in January, 1,334 hourly employees at the Ultium Cells plant in Lordstown were laid off due to production schedule adjustments, with about 850 of them being temporary.
United Auto Workers (UAW) Local 1112 President George Goranitis tells 21 News as it stands, temporarily laid-off employees are still slated to come back to work within the first two weeks of June as scheduled.
However, Goranitis says their layoff could be extended further due to a lower-than-expected demand for electric vehicles. Goranitis adds that once a decision is made, union members will be notified and a union meeting will be scheduled.
The layoffs were done to allow for facility upgrades to provide greater flexibility for future production due to a lower-than-expected adoption rate for electric vehicles.
