YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio- A Youngstown animal shelter was raided Wednesday, just one week after moving into a new, larger facility.

More than 75 cats were removed from the Cat Lady Society on Mahoning Avenue by humane agents amid complaints from adoptees, former employees and volunteers.

Humane agent Joe Borosky said the animals removed are in poor health.

"Most of the cats here are sick. Some are near death. There's blood, open sores, eyes are pussed shut, expired medication. Overall not a good situation for the animals," Borosky said.

Over 75 cats were removed from the Cat Lady society building. They will be examined by veterinarians from animal charity.

Operators of the shelter said they helped get 714 cats adopted last year alone.

Vice president Edie Goetz said the animals are well taken care of.

"Our cats are healthy. The ones that aren't are getting healthy. Because we're a no-kill shelter, if they get sick, we don't put them down like the Humane Society would do. We care for them. So we have a lot of sick cats getting medication right now and they are getting better," Goetz said.

Charges could come as early as Thursday in connection with the raid.
