STRUTHERS, Ohio - Four days after graduating from Campbell High School, a young man has died in a tragic accident in Struthers.

Neighbors, who heard the screeching tires and impacts and then witnessed the aftermath, are shaken.

The single car crash took place at about 10:49 p.m. on Sunday as six teens were leaving a festival in Campbell and going to play basketball in Niles.

As the driver traveled around a curve, something went terribly wrong as they headed south on State Street in Struthers.

Ashley Beach says it was so loud; there were a ton of booms with kids lying in the street here and there. She says one young man landed in the front yard of a home that faces the street.

Beach, who helped a young man at the scene by giving him her phone to call his mother, says she can't get the images or screaming out of her mind.

She says one of the young men was walking around asking if he was sleeping and if the accident was a dream.

She tells 21 News that hubcaps, backpacks, and bloody shoes were strewn along the road.

She returned to the scene of the crash on Monday and found more cell phones from the victims. She turned those phones over to the Struthers Fire Department.

One of the teens thrown from the minivan, as it flipped three times, was 18- year-old Tryell Freeman who died at the scene.

Freeman had just graduated from Campbell Memorial High School four days ago. His track coach, Mary Janek, said Freeman was a team leader for the varsity track team and really pulled the team together his senior year. Freeman ran the 400 meter dash, was part of the four by four relay, and lettered in track.

Janek, who was also Freeman's chemistry teacher, says he was a good student who was well liked. Janek tells us Freeman had just taken the placement test for Youngstown State University.

Kori Hendershot, from Struthers, says it hurts that Freeman died so young. She tells 21 News that Freeman was the father of a one-year-old son and said "it's terrible he died before he had a chance to reach his goals and make his dreams reality." Hendershot says his parents and all who love Freeman are heartbroken.

Seventeen-year-old George LeFlore, 21-year-old Aaron Page, and 21-year-old Gerald Ruffin, Jr. are in fair condition. Sixteen-year-old LaVail LeFlore is in critical condition.

The driver, 18-year-old Robert Thompkins, was treated and released from the hospital. He tells detectives the breaks went out, but it appears speed may have been a factor. The speed limit where the accident took place is 25 miles an hour.

Struthers Chief Tim Roddy and investigators were out taking daytime photos of the skid marks leading up to the accident. Chief Roddy says it does not appear alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash.

Once the investigation is complete, information will be forwarded to the prosecutor's office to determine what charges the driver will face.

Beach and Hendershot are hopeful everyone will use extra caution around that bend on State Street which is also State Route 616. They worry a child crossing the street, or another crash will claim someone else's loved ones.
