NILES, Ohio -  The Trumbull County Grand Jury will consider the case of a Niles woman charged with child endangering after authorities say her 2-year-old son swallowed methadone, a synthetic opioid primarily used to treat addiction and chronic pain.

Abbigail G. McGhee, 31, was arrested Tuesday in connection with a May 17 incident at her home. According to a Niles police report, emergency services were called to her residence after a report that her 2-year-old was not breathing, having reportedly ingested a small portion of her methadone. The child was transported to Akron Children's in Boardman.

Methadone is a medication that helps manage opioid dependence by reducing withdrawal symptoms and cravings, and it is also prescribed for severe, chronic pain.

McGhee was initially held on a $250,000 bond, which was reduced to $50,000 during a court hearing Wednesday. She remained in Trumbull County Jail early Thursday, according to online records.
