Allegiant pilots strike temporarily averted

A labor dispute involving an airline carrier that flies out of the valley almost created a problem for travelers this holiday weekend.
It's business as usual at Allegiant's ticket counter inside the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport. But some customers, like Rhonda Accordino in Cortland, were worried when they saw a travel advisory on the airline's website, warning of a potential strike by Allegiant's pilots who are members of Teamsters Local 1224.
"At first, I thought it was an April fools joke and then I did a little more research and found out that it wasn't," Accordino said.
Accordino was relieved to find out that by early Wednesday evening, a court in Las Vegas issued a temporary restraining order against the teamsters, averting a strike that would have grounded more than 250 flights over the busy holiday weekend.
"And then once I get to Florida, coming back is another question. Will it be resolved by next Thursday so I can get back and get back to work."
According to the information on Allegiant's website, the pilot's union is expected to go back into negotiations with a federal mediator toward the end of this month."
According to the Teamsters website, pilots had threatened to strike over haphazard scheduling, which creates exhaustion and stress. Other claims are over operational problems that lead to delays and cancellations.
A representative from local 1224 did not return our calls or emails.
A statement from Allegiant refers to the union's strike threat as "irresponsible" and "illegal."
A spokesperson with the airline is not sure how long the restraining order covers.
At this time, all scheduled flights are expected to operate normally.
