CANFIELD, Ohio - Two Canfield restaurants are back open this week after workers may have gotten sick from lacquer fumes.
The Village Pump and the Phoenix Fire Grill & Bar located on the corner of Route 46 and Shields Road had to close Friday when the restaurants started to smell.
A co-owner of the Village Pump said they got a call from two of their workers around 10 a.m. Friday that the place smelled like it was going to blow up.
He said there was a new tenant moving into the plaza and workers had to come in and spray a moisture-cured urethane, which is a compound used in making pesticides and fungicides.
The workers allegedly left the door to that business closed when they left and it was not properly ventilated, so the fumes traveled through the attic into the adjacent buildings, according to the co-owner.
When both he and another co-owner arrived, there were people from both restaurants outside getting sick and the fire department was on the scene.
The Village Pump posted on their Facebook page that due to the fumes, they had to close Friday through Sunday, losing about $15,000.
The co-owner said the urethane did not dry until Saturday night.
He said they were not notified that workers were coming in spraying the lacquer in the new business and their landlord told them they have to come back and do it again.
The Ohio EPA and the Ohio Department of Health are both involved and the Village Pump is meeting with their lawyer soon to discuss what happened, he said.
The co-owner said Phoenix was able to open their doors Sunday and are open Monday.
