KENT, Ohio - Former Mahoning County Assistant Prosecutor, now a judge in Portage County, has been sentenced for a drunk driving charge that resulted in a traffic accident.
Portage County Common Pleas Judge Rebecca Doherty appeared in Kent Municipal Court Friday where she pleaded guilty and was found guilty of operating a vehicle under the influence.
Doherty was fined $375 and sentenced to three days in a Driver's Intervention Program.
Ohio’s Driver Intervention Program (DIP) is an alternative to the mandatory three-day jail term that judges may order for first-time offenders convicted of operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or other drugs.
Her driver's license has been suspended until February of next year, but the judge granted her limited driving privileges.
Judge Doherty was ticketed shortly before midnight Sunday after police say the SUV she was driving was involved in a non-injury accident on State Route 43 in Brimfield Township.
According to the ticket and Kent Municipal Court records, Doherty refused to undergo a blood alcohol test. As a result, her driver's license has automatically been suspended.
Doherty worked in as an assistant prosecutor in the Mahoning County Prosecutor's office for five years, until she won election to Portage County Common Pleas Court in 2014.
