Plans for $22 million Youngstown infrastructure project moving forward

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Work plans are still moving forward on a $22 million transportation infrastructure project.
That project, SMART-2, will renovate the downtown area and the Fifth Avenue corridor.
An open house was held today at Eastgate to show an updated look at what the project will look like.
The goal is to improve connectivity from downtown to Youngstown State University, to the hospital.
"On all the roads we had the opportunity to road diet, which is moving some of the curbs in making the streets a little bit smaller. Traffic doesn't call for five lanes, but for three, we are going to take advantage of that space by providing more walkability and green space," said Jim Kinnick, executive director of Eastgate Council.
The new project will begin next April and should be finished in late 2021.
