NILES, Ohio - City Auditor Giovanne Merlo confirmed to 21 News Thursday that his entire six-member staff will begin working remotely starting Friday, March 27. Merlo said he wants to make certain his office operates in “a safer environment” during the coronavirus pandemic, but emphasized that despite the move, business will not be interrupted no matter how long remote operations last.

We worked with our (information technology) department so the staff will be able to do everything away from our office,” Merlo said. The auditor said the decision was supported by the union representing three members of his office. Merlo said that assessments of the COVID-19 situation by the Ohio Department of Health would determine how long the remote operations continue. “We’re just taking it day-by-day,” he said.

Despite the move, Niles residents wishing to contact his office by phone can still call Niles City Hall at (330) 544-9000, extension 1120. The calls will be directed to a member of the staff.

Meanwhile, Mayor Steve Mientkiewicz told 21 News that clerical employees in the service, parks, buildings, and other departments would also begin working Friday remotely. In addition, the mayor’s plans include implementing rotating shifts for some service workers and supervisors. Mientkiewicz said the city has also planned for a worst-case scenario.

We have plans for a cultural shutdown, and a government-mandated quarantine if it comes to that,” the mayor said.
