Remembering the Lake Milton couple killed in house fire
After a fire swept through a Lake Milton home Saturday killing an elderly couple, the community is still in shock about their death.
Murle and Kaye McLaughlin spent their entire life serving and giving back.
Murle was in the Navy where he served in Iwo Jima and Okinawa. The couple met in Lake Milton and have been married for over 60 years.
"Where there was Murle, there was Kaye," said John Chittock, American Legion 737 Chaplain. "They were inseparable and gave a lot to this community."
Murle was the last living founder of American Legion Post 737 in Lake Milton and continued to give over 50 years of service to the local post.
Kaye was also a ladies auxiliary member for over 50 years. The couple hosted food giveaways, volunteered at the VA clinic, the Milton Township Fire Department and were members of the Lake Milton Presbyterian Church for more than 50 years.
"What they gave of their lives to this community was immeasurable," Chittock said. "It just seemed like every time you turned around, they were doing something else."
Murle founded the Lake Milton Historical Society and him and Kaye would volunteer at Jackson Milton schools teaching history and Veterans Day education.
"Civil War, WWI, WWII, if you go over to Murle's house, it was a history lesson," Chittock said.
Chittock, like many others, were inspired by the McLaughlin's life of service, with Murle leaving back important life advice.
"Murle said to me, 'John, don't ever quit volunteering. There's always people that need help," Chittock said.
The couple was awarded the 'Joined Hearts in Giving Couples Award in 2008' by then Ohio Governor Ted Strickland to honor and thank them for dedicating their lives to helping others.
Funeral services for the McLaughlin's have not been released.
