1996: Albert R. Hill, 75, a former Wheatland Borough councilman, dies in a fire at his Grandview Drive home that was sparked by a toaster oven.
 
Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge tells 124 graduates of Thiel College that they control their own destinies, and when they make correct choices, their community will benefit as well. 
 
Atty. Richard McLaughlin, completing nine years as a trustee of Youngstown State University, says when he joined the board in 1987 it was dominated by Michael Monus, whose priority was increasing support for intercollegiate athletics. The present board, he says, is more collegial and is working with President Leslie Cochran on preparing YSU to educate students in the 21 st century. 
 
1981: Ohio's capital improvements budget has $16 million for dental and veterinarian medicine schools at Youngstown State University, says state Sen. Harry Meshel, D-Youngstown.
 
In keeping with pacifist inclinations long embedded in Salem, the Quaker City, a group of residents has objected to City Council and Mayor Robert Sell proclaiming a “National Defense Night" that was promoted by the local American Legion, Amvets and VFW.
 
Mill Creek Park has bought five paddle boats that will be docked on Glacier Lake and available for renting by the half hour. 
 
1971: Youngstown's Crandall Park Lake is fouled by an oil discharge from the city's storm sewers. The swans are listless and won't enter the water. In the past, some of the beautiful birds have been killed by oil contamination. 
 
A group of residents of New Springfield are protesting Youngstown's use of the Mahoning Landfill Corp. property on Garfield Road for disposal of the city's refuse. 
 
There's a new addition to the wildlife at the Lloyd Brauninger farm on Logan Road in Liberty Township with the birth of a South American llama. 
 
1946: Firemen seek the cause of a near-disastrous fire at the Hotel Pick-Ohio which sent more than 250 guests from the beds into the street. The fire started in the Manhattan Room, which was heavily damaged. 
 
The rate the Mahoning Valley Sanitary District charges Youngstown and Niles for water will increase 70 cents per million gallons, from $36.80 to $37.50.
 
Carl P. Smith, the 2-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs.  Joseph L. Smith,  Ferndale Avenue, is killed when struck by a car that backed out of a neighbor's driveway, striking the boy who was on a tricycle.
