Two jailed in Struthers animal cruelty case

Two people have been arrested in connection with an investigation into the death of a dog at a home in Struthers.
Joseph Angelo, 25, and 24-year-old Jamie Burk were booked into the Mahoning County Jail early Thursday on two counts each of cruelty to companion animals.
Warrants were issued for their arrests last week after the Mahoning County Grand Jury handed up indictments in the case.
The investigation began in January after Animal Charity agents say they were denied access to a Frank Street home after learning that a dog that died there appeared to be malnourished.
After enlisting the help of police and a court order, agents searched the home where they say they found clothing, garbage, and food on the floor.
They also found two dog cages and a dog in one room. One officer says he could smell urine, claiming that his eyes burned, and his throat felt scratchy.
A room where children were staying had worn-out mattresses and a dog barricaded in a closet, according to the report.
Struthers Police told 21 News 7 dogs, 1 cat, and 1 iguana were removed from the home that day and taken to Animal Charities.
Angelo and Burk are scheduled to appear for arraignment in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court on Tuesday.
