1997: An FBI affidavit that reads like a thriller outlines how aging mobsters Bernie Altshuler and Lenine Strollo conspired to have rival Ernest A. Biondillo Jr. murdered. Four Youngstown men have been implicated in Biondillo's shotgun death, including one who kept an "EB" ring taken from the dead man.
Rep. Ron Hood of Canfield, R-57, opposes a bill that supporters say would make buying fireworks easier and safer in the state because Hood says, it favors existing fireworks companies and makes it more difficult for those wishing to enter the business.
The Trumbull Correctional Institution has fired 24 employees who have been found to have falsified their job applications, including one who worked there for five years before it was found she lied about having a college degree.
1982: Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini unleashes a flurry of 30 punches to score a first-round technical knockout of Arturo Frias to capture the World Boxing Association lightweight championship in Las Vegas.
General Motors' steel-buying strategy will probably have a vital impact on the Youngstown District's remaining steelmaking industry and on some 20,000 jobs, especially if it spreads to GM's competitors. The company announced that it will no longer pay market prices for steel, but will take competitive bids. Steel orders have been worth $250 to $300 million a year to Youngstown mills.
Mayor George Vukovich says Youngstown's neighborhoods must receive an infusion of funds from both private and public sources if the city is to overcome its current economic crisis.
