Local communities recommending people to stay indoors after East Palestine controlled explosion

Mahoning Valley - Some local communities are suggesting residents stay indoors after a controlled release of vinyl chloride in East Palestine late Monday afternoon.
According to a Facebook post from the Mahoning County Emergency Management Agency (EMA), residents of Mahoning County who observe a haze or smell a chemical odor are recommended to stay indoors.
Mahoning EMA clarifies that this is not an order, but a recommendation made in consultation with Ohio EPA and Mahoning County HAZMAT.
According to a Facebook post from Boardman Assistant Fire Chief, Bill Glaser, HAZMAT crews in Mahoning County are conducting air monitoring in Boardman and its neighboring communities.
21 News spoke with Austintown Assistant Fire Chief David Schertzer who tells us as of right now, there have been no reports of anything toxic in the air, but says if you see or smell something, it doesn't hurt to check with EMA or HAZMAT officials.
As of this writing, the latest information from Mahoning County EMA states that air sampling has been completed and that there are no reportable levels of contaminates in the air.
According to a Facebook post from the Mahoning County HAZMAT Response Agency, multiple air monitoring crews have been deployed since Monday night and all findings show no hazards present throughout Mahoning County.
HAZMAT officials say the concern for toxic chemicals in the air in Mahoning County is "slim to none."
However, EMA officials still recommend Mahoning County residents to "exercise common sense."
