Youngstown man says judge is 'going to hell' when given two life sentences for child rape

WARREN, Ohio - Wednesday's sentencing hearing for 25 year old Darrl Mack came to an audacious close.
As Trumbull County Common Pleas Court Judge Cynthia Westcott Rice dismissed Mack, she said "have a nice life, Mr. Mack." To which he replied "you're going to hell just like the rest of 'em," referring to similar statements he made during his trial.
A jury convicted the Youngstown man last month of raping three victims all younger than 13. Judge Rice handed him consecutive life sentences plus five years.
Minutes prior, Mack described his trial and the legal system as unfair.
"A secret indictment is against the law," he said. "My 90-day speedy trial, I didn't receive one of that because of this counsel man right here, and I don't feel like I was effectively represented."
Mack insisted he's innocent, as he did during his trial.
The statements from the three young victims, however, told a different story.
"Our parents made sure we knew about this type of stuff but I never thought it would really happen to me until it did really happen to me," one said.
Prosecutors called the sentence satisfying and said Mack's comments showed contempt for the legal process.
"It is a different kind of evil and I expected nothing less from him," said assistant prosecutor Diane Barber. "It definitely sends a message to sex offenders and this defendant in particular that this type of behavior will not be tolerated in Trumbull County."
Mack had only been out of prison for another crime mere months before these rapes happened.
Judge Rice wanted to send a message of her own.
"The defendant has shown no remorse and no acceptance of responsibility," she said.
Mack is expected to appeal his sentence.
