The Niles Police Department will have a beefed-up presence at the Eastwood Mall with plans to open a substation at the shopping complex.

Mall operator the Cafaro Company has announced that city police will open the new substation in the Food Court area during an 11 a.m. ceremony on Friday, May 5.

According to a news release from Cafaro, the 1,112-square-foot space is being provided as part of a partnership between the mall and the police department.

“The new substation will afford officers a high-visibility location which will enhance their ability to interact with the public, as well as providing them with a convenient office space for gathering and completing reports,” according to the news release.

Just last week, police posted a mall security video of a suspect grabbing an item from a jewelry store kiosk and running away.

The mall complex is in the process of several new businesses opening, including Longhorn Steakhouse, a HomeGoods, Meijer Superstore, Auto Evolution/Noel's Car Toys and Bass Pro Shops Outpost.
