Jim Jordan, the Congressman representing Ohio's Fourth district in the US House of Representatives, has declared that he is running for Speaker of the House.

The announcement, made on X, comes after the historic ouster of former speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA 20) after a 216-210 vote on Tuesday night. The vote was the first time a vote had been initiated to remove the Speaker in over 100 years, and the first time in US history that a Speaker was successfully removed.

208 Democrats were joined by 8 Republicans in the vote to remove McCarthy, which was initiated by Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz after McCarthy worked a deal supported by Democrats to avert a government shutdown late last week.

This won't be Jordan's first time in the ring, either. He also ran in the first ballots for Speaker back in January, when the newly elected 118th Congress first arrived in Washington. In the first three ballots, Jordan received 6, 19, and then 20 votes before backing out for the remaining 12 ballots, after which McCarthy was elected Speaker in an unprecedented 15th vote.

Jordan claims that his work on immigration and oversight issues make him a qualified candidate for the job.

“Now is the time for our Republican conference to come together to keep our promises to Americans. The problems we face are challenging, but they are not insurmountable. We can focus on the changes that improve the country and unite us in offering real solutions," Jordan wrote. "But no matter what we do, we must do it together as a conference. I respectfully ask for your support for Speaker of the House of Representatives.”

Jordan is the first to put his hat formally into the ring, but will likely soon be joined by Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA 1).

After his announcement, Jordan received a few endorsements from fellow Republicans in the House. "I support Jim Jordan for Speaker," said Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky.

"We need a conservative fighter to stand up strong to the Biden White House and Democrat Senate and I can't think of anyone better than Jim Jordan," said GOP Rep. Jim Banks, who is also running for Senate in Indiana.

Conservative commentator Tomi Lahren also voiced her support, saying on X that "Jim Jordan would be a fantastic speaker."

She was joined by fellow commentator and Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, who said "If this entire process ends with Jim Jordan as the new House Speaker, then Republicans will be in a great position moving forward. Jim Jordan for House Speaker!"

The House is out of session for the week, and a vote for Speaker will have to wait until next Tuesday when they return.
