PA Treasury: $14.8 million in unclaimed funds returned, includes thousands for Mercer residents

Mercer County, Pa. - Pennsylvania Treasurer Stacy Garrity announced that $14.8 million in unclaimed property has been returned to county governments all over the commonwealth.
That includes a total of $3,830 for some Mercer County.
"Getting this money back where it belongs is fantastic news for the Pennsylvanians who call these counties home," said Treasurer Garrity. "I'm grateful to the many county commissioners, county treasurers and other officials who worked with us to make this happen. I look forward to working with more counties and other local government agencies, including school districts and municipalities, to return even more unclaimed property in 2024."

The unclaimed property can come from dormant bank accounts, uncashed checks, and forgotten safe deposit boxes among other places.
The Pennsylvania Treasury has more than $4.5 billion in unclaimed property to return to residents. The department says over one in 10 Pennsylvanians are owed unclaimed property, with the average claim worth $1,600.
The treasury keeps physical unclaimed property for three years before auctioning it off. Proceeds from the auction is kept for owners to claim.
