Lakeview Schools vote to remove levy from March ballot

CORTLAND, Ohio - The Lakeview Local School Board voted to remove a 4.7 mill levy that would appear on the March 19 ballot on February 12.
Recently, the district was notified that it would be receiving a 12% increase to inside mills from property revaluations.
Inside mills allow the government to collect on property taxes without any prior approval or restrictions.
The increase in inside mills would help maintain current services and prevent more financial cuts.
However, according to a press release, the board decided to remove the levy because local property owners and retirees will struggle to pay their 2023 property taxes, with some having rates surpassing 40%.
The school district has not passed an operating levy since 2010, which means that the district's budget has not been adjusting to account for inflation.
Lakeview's Board President Mark Harper stated that he hopes local residents will recognize the district's commitment to using taxpayer money responsibly and maintaining a supportive and collaborative community.
