The request for a lower bond for a Youngstown man accused of the murder of a 22-year-old man on the city's north side has been denied.

Attorneys for 19-year-old Elijah May had requested his bond of $100,000 be cut in half to $50,000 claiming he had no prior felony record, cooperated with police at the scene and acted in self-defense.

However, Judge Maureen Sweeney denied this request, so May's bond will remain at $100,000.

May is currently facing 12 charges including murder, felonious assault, aggravated assault, voluntary manslaughter, involuntary manslaughter, violation of a protection order, having weapons while under disability, criminal endangering and three counts of discharging a firearm into a habitation.

The charges stem from the shooting death of 22-year-old Ray'mon Sims back in April of 2023. Sims was killed as he was driving near Tod Lane. His car crashed into a home on Alameda Avenue shortly after he was shot.

May is due back in court August 7 for a pretrial hearing.
