Aqua notifying customers with service lines made of lead, galvanized steel, unknown materials

STRUTHERS, Ohio - Aqua is notifying its customers who have service lines made of lead, as well as galvanized steel or other unknown materials.
Affected customers should have received or should be receiving a notice in the mail notifying them of this matter. Those with service lines confirmed to not be made of lead-bearing materials will not receive a notification.
Area Manager for Aqua's Struthers Division Jennifer Johnson is quoted in a press release stating that Aqua is working with the EPA to identify these lead lines.
"Once they've been identified, we'll work with property owners to replace these lines," Johnson said.
According to the release, lead has been linked with serious health complications, especially in young children.
Lead service lines have been prohibited for use in plumbing in Ohio since 1988. However, properties built prior to 1988 may still have lead service lines.
Customers are not being asked to take any action at this time. The letter is only being sent for informational purposes and provides simple tips to limit exposure to lead.
The letter informs customers that Aqua is working to identify unknown service line materials and replace those made of lead or galvanized steel at no cost to customers.
Aqua serves about 60,000 customers in the Mahoning Valley in areas including Campbell, Struthers, Lowellville, New Middle Town, Poland Village and Township, Beaver Township, Boardman, Canfield Township, Coitsville and Springfield Township.
