U.S. senators Bernie Moreno of Ohio and Tim Scott of South Carolina introduced a new piece of legislation that aims to empower President Donald Trump to put sanctions on foreign governments refusing to accept migrant repatriation flights from the U.S.

"Our bill will give President Trump all the authority he needs to apply maximum pressure against corrupt individuals within foreign governments who refuse to allow the US to secure our borders," said Moreno.

The bill was named the Stifling Transnational Operations and Proliferators by Mitigating Activities that Drive Narcotics, Exploitation and Smuggling Sanctions (STOP MADNESS) Act.

STOP MADNESS also aims to put sanctions on individuals who willingly facilitate illegal immigration and authorizes the president to block the individuals from assets and restrict transactions, invoking the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA).

Senator Scott spoke to the importance of this act saying "If a foreign entity shows resistance to repatriation or enables illegal immigration to the United States, they should be met with the full force of our economic and national security tools."

The bill will also mandate reports based on these actions if and when the president enforces the bill to provide transparency to Congress for further legislative action.
