Howland police investigating attempted ATM theft from area gas station

HOWLAND, Ohio - Police in Howland are investigating after a report of the attempted theft of an ATM from a gas station in the township Monday morning.
According to a police report, police were dispatched to the Valley View Food Mart on Elm Road just after 5 a.m. Monday following an alarm drop.
When police got there, they saw that the front glass doors and windows had been broken, as well as structural damage to the walls. Police say an ATM safe was sitting in the sidewalk just outside the front of the store.
Additionally, police found a plastic bumper cover, pieces of a broken tail light and a car ashtray, as well as coiled rope, a black ski hat and a black glove among the debris.
Police spoke with an employee at the gas station who said he was alerted to the incident from his camera system, but he did not see any suspects or vehicles leaving the scene.
Police spoke with another witness at a neighboring business who told officers he heard a loud crashing noise coming from the gas station. That's when he saw an older model light-colored pickup truck in the parking lot.
The witness told police he saw three people get out of the truck and attempt to load something in the back. At one point the witness heard one of the suspects saying "let's just go" before the truck drove away.
The witness said it sounded like the truck was dragging something.
At this time, no suspects have been identified and no charges have been filed.
