Richard Celeste visited Mahoning and Trumbull counties 40 years ago to tout the success of Operation Jobs Ohio and to promise to fight for fair trade policies on the national level. The governor mingled with workers outside Thermotex Corp. in Newton Falls, which received a $400,000 low-interest loan. He also visited Dietrich Industries in Warren, United States Can Co. in Hubbard, LTV Steel Tubular products in Youngstown, and Youngstown State University.

2000: Howland Police Chief Steve Lamantia says he believes bones found under floorboards in a house being torn down at 3003 Republic Avenue, Bolindale, are those of Lawrence Brater, who lived in the house when he disappeared Dec. 24, 1991.

Delphi Automotive Systems earned the General Motors Supplier of the Year award for airbag systems, steering wheels, and wiring harnesses, most of which are produced at two Delphi plants in Matamoros, Mexico.

Justin Pishner, a Newton Falls eighth grader, is claiming a First Amendment right to circulate petitions asking NBC, CBS, and ABC networks to stop airing programs that portray homosexual lifestyles. The 14-year-old student says the Bible condemns homosexuality as "not natural." School officials say they are trying to balance the First Amendment right of a student against their obligation to provide a nonharassing environment for all students. 

 

1985: A nationwide gun registration proposed by U.S. Rep. James A Traficant Jr., D-17th, triggers a volley of criticism for leading Second Amendment advocates, including the NRA, which calls it "absurd."

The names of nine victims of an illegal fireworks plant explosion in Beaver Township are released: Timothy C. Day, Jeffrey Strawbridge, John Smith, Edward Malysa, Kenneth Fogelman, James and Bonnie Lou Russo, husband and wife, and Nancy Wylam Khan and Randy Wylam, brother and sister. They ranged in age from 21 to 30 and were promised $5  per hour in cash. 

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency will provide $9.3 million toward the $16.8 million cost of a secondary water treatment plant in Niles. 

 

1975: Four students receive YSU pins during Youngstown State's convocation: Judith Barrett of Boardman, SueEllen Harris of Girard, Joseph Simko of Newton Falls, and Edward Sturgeon of Liberty. 

Teachers in Champion continue their 10-day strike, defying an injunction issued by Trumbull County Common Pleas Court ordering them back to work. 

John A. Logan, president of Ajax Magnethermic Corp., and Bruce E. McArthur, a major stockholder, reached an agreement with Guthrie Corp. of England to sell a 58 percent interest in the company. 

 

1950: The Rev. Earl Fritz, pastor of Ellsworth Presbyterian Church, bitterly assails the presence of slot machines in the community in a sermon warning that hoodlums may bomb the church for its anti-gambling position. 

Dr. John S. Lewis of Newport Drive, a nationally known urologist, drowned in Lake Rideau, near Kingston, Ontario, during a fishing trip.
