1999: FBI Special Agent Robert Kroner Jr. spent a week teaching at the International Law Enforcement Academy in Budapest, Hungary, discussing how the FBI attacked organized crime in the Mahoning Valley.   

Commercial Intertech Corp. has named Stephen J. Perkins, former president of a small automotive parts supplier, as its new president and CEO.

A Youngstown woman, Michelle L. Howell, 28, was killed when her car ran head-on into a Youngstown school bus on Lansdowne Blvd. near Republic Street.  Neither the driver of the bus nor one student on it was injured. 

1984: Columbiana County Sheriff Richard J. Koffel says his department will conduct a demonstration of firepower at the Columbiana County Fish and Game Club during which weapons carried by deputies and weapons confiscated from criminals will be fired. He says the demonstration will show that criminals have more powerful and deadly weapons than law enforcement officers. 

Niles Councilman Richard Marino sparks a fiery exchange at a city council meeting when he persists in his accusations that Mayor John P. Shaffer and Police Chief John Ross have been less than aggressive in responding to reports of illegal gambling in the city. 

Mahoning County will receive more than $1 million in federal money to rebuild the 73-year-old Center Street Bridge in Youngstown. 

1974: Georgia Grimm of Austintown receives a Silver Fawn Award at the 16th annual appreciation dinner of the Mahoning Valley Council of Boy Scouts of America. Murle L. McLaughlin, Chester Taylor, and James S. Houser receive Silver Beaver awards. 

Six members of Salem High School's June graduating class, all girls, have earned straight A's and are tied for top scholastic honors. They are Kim Berger, Diane Curtis, Judy Kuniewicz, Kay Ramsay, Jill Yuhaniak, and Mary Zatko.

There’s a new entrance building and a new electronic shooting gallery.1949: Primary voting in Campbell is heavy, with a turnout of 80 percent expected by day's end. There's a hot Democratic primary race between Joseph E. Julius and Michael Kovach. 

Youngstown City Council approved pay raises for top city officials, with the mayor's salary increasing from $7,200 to $9,000 a year, the law director's salary increasing from $6,000 to $7,500, and judges' salaries increasing from $6,300 to $7,500.
