Man on probation for 2019 bank robbery accused of Boardman bank holdup

BOARDMAN A 48-year-old parolee from Columbiana County has been arrested in Boardman on a felony robbery charge, shortly after police say he stole cash from a PNC bank branch near the Southern Park Mall.
Tary Gilbert of Hanover Township was arrested Thursday by the Boardman Police Department and booked into the Mahoning County Jail on a federal warrant for probation violation and charges stemming from earlier incidents in Youngstown.
According to the police report, a teller at the PNC Branch on Market Street told officers a man—later identified as Gilbert—approached the counter just before 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, initially asking to make a withdrawal. The man then allegedly demanded "all of the cash from the drawer."
Gilbert reportedly grew agitated after the teller provided a small amount of cash, taking two $100 bills and one $20 bill, totaling $220, before fleeing on foot into the mall through the food court entrance.
Boardman officers arrested Gilbert near the JCPenney store on the mall’s east side. A search of the path Gilbert took led officers to recover a gray hooded sweatshirt, consistent with witness descriptions of the suspect, from a trash receptacle in a mall restroom.
Officers confirmed Gilbert was wanted on several active warrants, including one from the Youngstown Police Department for robbery and a federal warrant issued by the U.S. Marshal's Service for a probation violation.
Police have not said if Gilbert is a suspect in Tuesday’s holdup of the Huntington Bank on Market Street in Youngstown. Youngstown Municipal Court records show Gilbert is facing charges for a third-degree felony robbery and a misdemeanor theft charge.
Gilbert has past federal convictions, including multiple counts of bank robbery and attempted bank robbery dating back to 2019, according to court records.
Gilbert served federal prison time for robbing two Huntington Bank branches and a Dollar General Store in Akron in 2019.
Gilbert is being held without bond at the Mahoning County Jail. He is scheduled for a video arraignment in Youngstown Municipal Court at 1:30 p.m. Friday.
