Bond set for man accused of Youngstown, Boardman bank robberies

YOUNGSTOWN & BOARDMAN - Bond has been set for a man accused of robbing banks in Youngstown and Boardman within the same week.
Forty-eight-year-old Tary Gilbert is charged with two counts of robbery with one being a felony and the other being a misdemeanor. Bond was set at $15,000 for the felony charge and $5,000 for the misdemeanor charge.
Court records list the date of offense for the misdemeanor charge as October 7, which is the same day as the incident at a Huntington Bank in Youngstown. Meanwhile, a police report for the Boardman incident lists the felony charge.
Police recounted similar circumstances on both reports. In the Youngstown report, police say Gilbert waited in line at the Huntington Bank on Market Street Near Vermont Avenue.
When it was his turn, police say Gilbert demanded all $100 and $50 bills and fled in an unknown direction.
Meanwhile in the Boardman, incident, police say Gilbert walked up to a teller at the PNC Bank near the Southern Park Mall and asked to make a withdrawal. When the teller asked how much he wanted, Gilbert allegedly demanded all the $100, $50 and $20 bills she had.
Police say Gilbert became agitated when the teller only handed him $220, allegedly saying, "That can't be all you have."
Gilbert has past federal convictions, including multiple counts of bank robbery and attempted bank robbery dating back to 2019, according to court records. He served federal prison time for robbing two Huntington Bank branches and a Dollar General Store in Akron in 2019.
Court records show Gilbert is due back in court October 17 for a preliminary hearing.
