Trumbull County Commissioners accepted a $1.7 million grant Wednesday to repair the roof of Trumbull County Jail. Commissioners say the roof has been a problem for years, with constant leaking issues.

Commissioner Tony Bernard told 21 News that the funds, however, can only be used to repair the roof over the jail portion of the building, not the offices. He added that the money needs to be spent this year and that contractors are set to visit the site later this week to assess how much the repairs will cost.

The county commissioners have also obligated $500,000 for new boilers in the jail. Bernard said the jail will have new boilers installed within the next two weeks, depending on the weather; heat to the building would be turned off during the installation so Bernard said the boiler installation would only move forward if local temperatures stay on the warmer side.
