Grocery Outlet Bargain Market in Austintown to close after less than a year in business

AUSTINTOWN - Grocery Outlet Bargain Market is closing its Austintown location less than one year after it opened.
According to Gordon Brothers, the discount grocery store chain has put up 36 financially underperforming locations in six states, including Ohio, up for sublease, which means the store is offering up its space to a new tenant for the remainder of its lease.
Among those Ohio stores is the location in the Austintown Plaza on Mahoning Avenue. The company filed for closure on Monday, March 2.
According to Grocery Outlet's website, the company said the closures are part of "reshaping [its] new store growth strategy and reallocating resources to strengthen operating results and returns on capital."
"We are confident that we have identified the core challenges, and now we have the right plans in place and the right team to execute them," the release reads.
The Grocery Outlet Bargain Market was the last of four grocery retailers west of Route 46 in Austintown to open. It was also the newest of three local locations. The other two in Boardman and New Castle. The latter pair are not part of the closures.
"It's very disappointing of course to see this close within six months but the chances of another business coming here, hopefully a business person that will see the potential," said Monica Deavers, Austintown Township Trustee.
The grocery outlet's corporate headquarters has not issues a reason for the closure of the Austintown store.
Grocery Outlet's Austintown location opened in October of 2025 and remained open for just under five months before filing for closure. There is no word yet on when the store's last day of business will be, or if the employees will be able to transfer to the other two locations.
"I would like to see more entertainment, maybe a bigger clothing store. I do believe there is a lot of potential for Austintown," said Bruce Shepas, Austintown Township trustee.
Both Deavers and Shepas say they still welcome any venture of business.
Aside from the 19,000 square foot space the grocery outlet is leaving behind, there is a smaller vacant space that Shepas says a food option would be a good addition to the Austintown Plaza.
"I think we lack a restaurant in that area, with the exception of BREWS being there, there is really nothing else in that plaza other than Buffalo Wild Wings," Shepas added.
