Members of the Poland community were invited to participate in a special meeting by the Poland Local School District Board of Education, seeking community feedback.

The search for a new superintendent has been narrowed down to three candidates after the district's previous superintendent, Craig Hockenberry, retired due to medical reasons.

Those three candidates include:

  • Liberty Local Schools Superintendent and current Poland Local Schools Interim Superintendent Andrew Tommelleo
  • Louisville City Schools Superintendent Anna Minor
  • Newton Falls Exempted Village Schools Superintendent Andreas Johannson

"We wanted community input, as well as input from the teachers, as well as the administration," said Troy Polis, the President of the Poland Local School District Board of Education.

During Monday's meeting, residents and school staff were able to share what they liked about the previous superintendent, and what is hoped for with whoever takes over.

The meeting was held in three stations: The board meeting, a community forum and a candidate interview station.

Polis says that a survey of the community revealed one area that residents are hoping to see from the new superintendent.

"Basically, people want communication. Openness. People want access to the superintendent. Our prior superintendent, one thing he did great was communication - he communicated with the community. People was the see, especially post-COVID, parents want a big say in what's going on in the classroom," said Polis.

Polis goes on to say that the board has a scheduled meeting on Wednesday, March 11, and could have a decision on the superintendent by the end of the week.

"We expect a very seamless transition. We are interested to see what the new superintendent brings to the table in the future, regarding some buildings, regarding enrollment in the schools, the future of the district," said Polis.
