GIRARD, Ohio - Even it's name says it is not a big budget operation.  Small World rescue shelter in Girard is a labor of love for Veronica Caruso and Edna Bailey who opened the shelter in January.

"Edna and I decided, she has cats at home she's rescued, I have cats at home, we've got to do something" Veronica said.

So they looked around until they found a suitable building that they could afford.

"So we took our social security checks and we went and paid the rent" said Veronica.

The ladies are meticulous about care and clearing and all of the animals are vetted and spayed, neutered and shots, but Veronica says it's still a challenge to meet expenses.

"We also have food, liter, washing products, air and electricity, everything, the garbage all of that is very costly."

And they won't take in more animals than they can care for.

"We are at our full capacity now until we get some adoptions" according to Veronica.

Falcon Trucking in Girard has been helping with the shelter's vet bills, and the ladies do what they can to help make ends meet each month.

"We do have a garage sale every Saturday that we can and people thank goodness donate to us" said Veronica.

All of the animals are rescues and Veronica and Edna say their only mission is to find them all new homes.

"To give them a second chance at life" Edna said.

The Small World Rescue Shelter is located at 945 State Street in Girard.
