CANFIELD, Ohio - The National Weather Service has confirmed that an EF-1 tornado touched down in Ellsworth Twp. in Mahoning County and traveled 4 to 5 miles during Tuesday's afternoon storms.

The Weather Service issued a statement after inspecting damage in Mahoning County Tuesday afternoon.  Experts say the tornado touched down near the Society of St Paul on West Akron-Canfield Road and skipped east-northeast through Canfield Township and the city of Canfield and finally lifting near South raccoon road in the northeast corner of Canfield Township. About 10 homes were damaged with trees on several houses and a couple of garages were heavily damaged. The storm tracked for nearly 5 miles with a maximum width of 800 yards and estimated wind speed of 90 mph.

The Weather Service is also trying to determine if a tornado was responsible for damage in Mercer County.

Damage was reported at homes and trees along Henderson Road in Jackson Township as well as other areas.

At the location where the tornado first touched down in Ellsworth Township, a family on the 9200 block of Akron Canfield Road fled to the basement when the storm moved through just before 2:30 p.m.   Emergency crews on the scene report damage to the home, but no one was injured.

Damage to structures, along with downed trees and wires are reported on Caymen Court, as well as other properties along North Palmyra Road.

The damage extends in a northeasterly direction to Herbert Road in Canfield where trees were toppled and homes were damaged. Trees were also reported down around Canfield and McCarty roads.

The Youngstown fire department is investigating reports of several downed trees along Glenwood Avenue.

First Energy reports more than 2,000 homes and businesses have lost power, with most of the outages concentrated in Canfield, but outages extend into Beaver Township as well.

 More than 700 people are without power in East Lackawannock and  Worth Townships in Mercer County

First Energy has not given an estimated time when power will be restored.
