NORTH LIMA, Ohio - Rita's Italian Ice in North Lima could have been the latest victim in a telephone scam, after a caller claiming to be with First Energy told them their electric would be turned off if they didn't pay their bill immediately.

Luckily, Jill Klocek, the owner, had watched 21 News' story earlier this week, warning of the scam.

"I dont know what I would have done if I hadn't seen the story. Because I saw the story, man, I knew instantly," said Klocek.

Rita's isn't the first Valley business to be targeted and they're likely not the last. At least two other business have reported similar stories, only with a different ending.

Barry Dyngles, a restaurant in Austintown, followed the instructions of the caller and purchased two Green Dot Moneypak gift cards worth about $1,000.

These pre-paid cards allow customers to make same-day payments to major companies.

Antone's Restaurant in Boardman also purchased the cards after following the advice of the scammer.

According to the Better Business Bureau, it's not only businesses, but residents who are also falling victim to similar utility scams.

Columbia Gas, Dominion and other utilities have issued advisories warning their customers.

The BBB advises to be suspicious of callers who demand immediate payment. Never give out personal or financial information to anyone who calls or emails you. And never wire money or provide debit or credit card numbers to someone you don't know.
