Trumbull County sales tax currently sits at 6.75%. Commissioners are seriously considering a quarter-percent increase to help support the county's justice system which takes up most of their general budget.
"We're running at a very low balance left in the rainy day fund, less than a million dollars which gives us no reserve money to fall onto," said Trumbull County Auditor Adrian Biviano.
Monday night, residents had their final opportunity to try and influence commissioners one way or the other.
"If I have more money in my pocket or in my hand I can buy more and if I buy more they get more taxes, so if they raise the taxes I'm going to buy less because I don't have the expendable income," said Stan Shrodek of Cortland.
"I think if a performance audit was done and someone independent came in to show those figures I think there would be a lot more credibility and I think people would be more accepting of it," said Marlead Campbell of Cortland.
Commissioners have three options. They can either impose the tax, take it to voters to decide or do nothing at this time. They say they haven't decided however, many residents here felt that the meeting was a just a formality.
"It really isn't true. We haven't discussed. Personally I feel I have to go by the suggestion of the auditor if he feels I should impose a tax, he is the financial guy," said Commissioner Frank Fuda.
Fuda says, if the county wants to begin collecting the tax in July, commissioners need to impose the increase this week.
