GIRARD, Ohio - The Youngstown Bomb Squad was called to a Girard home Wednesday morning where they made an unusual discovery.
They found what's believed to be a World War II era military grenade in the front yard of a home on the 800 block of Woodlawn Avenue.
According to retired Army Major Stephen McGeorge, former Director of the Oregon Military Museum, the shell appears to be from a Type 86 Grenade Launcher, used by Japanese soldiers in World War Two.
The device, a shell used in what was called a knee mortar, still had the pin in it.
The grenade found on Wednesday once belonged to a decorated navy veteran who recently died at the age of 94.
A relative discovered the grenade after going through the veteran's possessions and called police.
Authorities safely removed the device and took it to a nearby shooting range for disposal.
