FARRELL, Pa. - The new Farrell Police Chief is getting public backlash after he sent an email containing a racial slur.

Chief Thomas Burke initially sent out the email to ask for donations to help buy new books for a local PTO group.

However, many of the recipients received a very different message.

Burke starts the email out with asking for donations, saying "even one dollar will be greatly appreciated."

The next part called out Sharon African Americans with a racial slur.

“I was very hurt and upset and i just feel like it was a negative response to our area here in Farrell and Sharon,” said Stephanie Sheffield, Farrel City Council.

The email was sent before Burke was chosen as the new chief, but Sheffield says that's no excuse.

“He came and knocked on my door this morning with an apology letter and how he is very familiar with our community and our area with some of the issues going on here and he does use the n word very often,”said Sheffield.

The mayor of Farrell says she believes Burke is a good cop, but that she does not condone what he said.
