MAHONING COUNTY, Ohio - This time of year shoppers hear the ringing of bells at local stores across the Valley. Those bells are rung by volunteers for the Salvation Army.
The Salvation Army of the Mahoning County got a little help of reaching their goal of $350,000 in the Red Kettle Campaign when they found two gold coins in local kettles. One was found at the Austintown WalMart and the another at the Cornersburg Sparkle Market.
On Tuesday, Mahoning County Salvation Army Coordinator Major Elijah Khan went to ACE diamond and Jewelry brokers in Boardman to get the coins appraised.
Each gold coin was valued at about $1,000.
“It's a great feeling. It tells us there are generous people in this community who want to make a difference, so it's heartwarming. It really is a special feeling,” said Kahn.
The Salvation Army found a gold coin last year worth $1,200.
