Changes coming to Youngstown trash collection

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Changes are coming to Youngstown trash pick-up.
On Wednesday council gave the city permission to borrow more than one-million dollars for new trash cans.
The 96-gallon containers, that can be automatically lifted by a garbage truck, should be delivered to households by mid-summer. Mayor John McNally says the change will not affect rates or scheduled pick-up days.
The city is also searching for a new company to handle the trash collection. When all is said and done, city officials estimate the changes will save about $230-thousand per year.
"Issues like this where the driver of the truck can do things automatically from the cab of their vehicle make things more efficient and more affordable for the sanitation folks. That means a reduction in cost to the city overall and that's where we believe we are going to see the savings here in the next couple of months," said McNally.
The mayor adds that landlords who are cleaning out a property will no longer be able to place a large amount of trash on the curb. Instead, they will have to get a dumpster and have a sanitation company remove the material.
