Youngstown Air Reserve Station hosting open house

They fly the skies over Vienna, but it's not every day you can get up close and personal with the big C-130's.
On Saturday, the Youngstown Air Reserve Station is pulling back the curtain, showcasing their missions and work
"The emphasis for this is all local," said Eric White, a public affairs specialist with 910th airlift wing.
Unlike air shows, the open house keeps the planes on the ground so you can walk inside the $80 million aircraft.
"This is a much more intimate opportunity for people to really meet some of the personnel at YARS and to get some more hands on experience with the equipment to really learn about the mission and ultimately be advocates for what goes on here," said White.
We spoke to some at YARS who specialize in equipping planes with survival gear, including masks and life rafts
"We're there as a just in case and a lot of times there are those just in cases where an extra 15 to 20 seconds can make all the difference," said Senior Master Sgt. Jim Haupt.
Others work on the main mission of the station, moving cargo and troops by traveling around the world to drop supplies via parachutes.
The station is also home to six C-130's, specially equipped to carry out the US Department of Defense's only Air Spray mission.
On the wings are pipes, which shoot out pesticides and even chemicals to help disperse oil spills.
"Mainly it is to protect troops in a deployed environment to eliminate insects that spread diseases," said White.
And with doctors on hand, people in finance and firefighters, the open house isn't just a way to showcase the station to recruits, but to show the public that there is more to the YARS than just planes.
The YARS open house in Vienna is on Saturday from 10 a.m - 4 p.m.
