COLUMBUS, Ohio - Scammers are calling Ohio residents and posing as staff members from the Department of Health, asking those on the line for personal information.

The scammers use ID spoofing technology to make it seem like they're calling from the Ohio Department of Health, local Ohio health departments, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, hospitals or healthcare providers.

The callers will often have some personal information about the people they are calling, such as their name, date of birth, address and their physician's name.

The Ohio Department of Health said they never call to seek personal information over the phone.

Since this scam involves spoofing a federal state agency's phone number, the Ohio Highway Patrol is investigating the calls.

If you receive a call from the ODH, or from anyone who claims they represent a company or government agency and seeks personal information, hang up and check that the number they're calling from is legitimate.

If someone is asking you for personal information and the circumstances seem suspicious, don't give it out, especially if you are being pressured for it immediately.

Lastly, if you think you have been called by a scammer impersonating a business, company or agency, file a complaint online with the Federal Trade Commission here
