State agents seize liquor from Warren store amid allegations of online rebate scam

WARREN, Ohio - The shelves are empty at a Warren liquor store amid allegations that some employees were using the product to obtain cash from an online rebate app.
Agents from the Ohio Department of Commerce Division of Liquor Control spent much of the day at Bootlegger Liquor on West Market Street taking back every bottle of alcohol in the store after revoking the businesses contract.
Lindsey Leberth, a spokesperson for the Ohio Department of Commerce, said the revocation comes after an investigation into an unusually high number of returns at the store.
Leberth said the investigation, which was conducted by the Ohio Department of Safety's Investigation Unit, uncovered evidence that employees were buying liquor from the store and submitting the receipts to an app called "Ibotta," which allows users to earn cash rebates for certain purchases. The workers would then return the liquor to the store.
In Ohio, the state owns liquor and contracts with stores to sell it for a commission.
Leberth said the alleged employee rebate scheme amounts to using the state's product to defraud another company.
No word if criminal charges will be filed.
