MENTOR, Ohio - UPDATE: The City of Mentor and the Mentor Police Department have released an update on the fatal hit-and-run that killed a Mentor Police Officer.

The Mentor Police department reported that a suspect is currently in custody and being questioned in relation to the hit-and-run.

Mentor Police said that the identity of the officer and the suspect will not be released until a press conference tomorrow morning. 


A Mentor Police officer was killed by a hit and run driver early Sunday morning.

The Mentor Police Department Facebook page reports that they are seeking assistance in the location of the suspect's vehicle.

The officer, whose identity has not yet been released, was struck by the driver around 1:00 a.m., while he was assisting in a traffic stop on State Route 2 Eastbound, according to the information on the Departments Facebook.

Reports state that he was taken to TriPoint Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

The suspect vehicle is said to be a "late-model, dark-colored, Jeep Wrangler." Police believe that it will have damage on its right front and possible side from the hit and run. 

The Mentor Police Department says that they are pursuing any information that may lead them to the location of the hit and run driver.

The Department is encouraging the public, as well as area body shops, to assist in finding the driver.

U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown released this statement Sunday in response to the officer's death:

"Our hearts go out to the officer's family, fellow officers and the entire Mentor community. We send or supports to the first responders and medical professionals who came to the scene and all those investigating this horrible tragedy. We are so grateful to all Ohio officers who put themselves in harm's way protecting our communities every day," said Senator Brown.

The Mentor Police Department tells 21 News that they are still gathering information, which is expected to be released later today.
