Ohio Disc Dogs take fetch to international level

AUSTINTOWN, Ohio - We've all seen videos of dogs leaping into the air to catch a frisbee. It's actually turned into a worldwide sport with a team right here in the Valley; the Youngstown chapter of the Ohio Disc Dogs.
Every Sunday, the Ohio Disc Dogs take a simple game of "fetch" to the next level, setting up cones and letting the frisbees fly.
"Basically you have 60 seconds to get as many points as you can. The further you throw the disc, the more points you get. Every 10 yards you get one more point. If the dog's up off of all fours when it catches it, you get an extra half a point," said David Tacsik.
It started out in Akron four years ago, adding the Youngstown chapter in 2016. Some of the dogs are show-offs, some of them occasionally just don't want to bring the frisbee back, but all of them are having fun.
"That's all they want to do. You say frisbee and they just go crazy and they know exactly what's going on. That's what they live for," said Tacsik.
"Some of them are very flashy, so you'll see some crazy leaps in the air that don't always quite make it to the frisbee. Some of them like to show off as they're coming back; like come along and make sure everybody sees that they have the frisbee in their mouth. They definitely like the attention," said co-captain Jasmyn McCarty.
Every week they're literally facing international competition. They take their scores from the field, then put them online to compete against teams from all over the world.
"It blew up so fast," said McCarty. "We just started four years ago and it was only Ohio and Michigan."
"We are now up to 84 teams worldwide," said co-captain Kevin McCarty. "Europe, Asia, Africa, Middle East, Australia. They're everywhere."
All over the world, with all different skill levels because when it comes down to it, even with the worldwide competition it's still all about a dog getting to play.
"Anybody can do it. It's literally for people who are beginners where their dog's never even seen a frisbee to anybody who's advanced, professional type," said Jasmyn McCarty.
"I haven't missed a week since we started this four years ago. It's something I look forward when we're doing it," said Kevin McCarty. "It's just a blast."
A blast for the dogs, in particular, flying through the air every Sunday as the Ohio Disc Dogs.
Sunday, July 8th will wrap up the summer season. They compete on Sunday nights at 6 p.m. at Austintown Township Park. The fall season gets going on August 12th.
