The sign they held aloft proved prophetic as Coach Jim Tressel's Youngstown State University Penguins won their third NCAA Division I-AA national football championship in four years, defeating Boise State 28-14.

1994: A suit filed by an Akron lawyer results in a court ruling that prohibits Salem Mayor Alvahn Mondell from hearing any contested cases in the mayor's court. All contested cases must be transferred to Columbiana County's Northwest Area County Court.
WCI Steel Inc. in Warren announces a $39 million, two-year capital improvement program to upgrade its hot strip mill.
Chin Hock Seng, first secretary for the Singapore Embassy in Washington, D.C., tells students at Lordstown High School that the caning of a young Ohio man, Michael Fay, was blown out of proportion, but also notes that in Singapore "crime is not a revolving door."
1979: One of the 50 hostages being held in the U.S. Embassy in Tehran has been identified as Gary Lee, 36, a 1970 graduate of Youngstown State University who has been a member of the U.S. Foreign Service since 1971.His wife, Pat, and daughter, Dana, 10, remain in Falls Church, Va. His sister-in-law Peggy Simmons lives in Boardman.
When jobs become scarce in the Mahoning Valley, business picks up at the Armed Forces recruiting center. Capt. Floyd Dobbins, commander of the Army's recruiting area, says the Army has met its goals the last two months, whereas a year ago the quota was not met.
Personal income in four of Mahoning County’s 14 school districts is above the state overage of $14,879: Canfield, Boardman, Poland and Western Reserve.

Mario Guerrieri of Youngstown, sought on a warrant issued by Judge Sidney Rigelhaupt, is brought to the Mahoning County Jail after being arrested in a Cuyahoga County motel, but the Ohio Supreme Court stays his prison sentence on a charge of possessing abortion tools and orders his release.
Trumbull County Commissioner Robert Hagan, 48, announces his candidacy for governor. Hagan has been a commissioner for seven years and chairman of the board for five of those years.
1944: There are no longer enough soldiers at Camp Reynolds in Western Pennsylvania so weekend dances and other entertainment at the USO Club and the YMCA in Youngstown are being discontinued.
S/Sgt. John Alm, Boardman Boulevard, and Pfc. Michael Bodesch, Forest Hill Drive, were among 80 American and British air troopers and pilots who played "hide and seek" with the Nazis after being shot down behind enemy lines. They are now safe.
