YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The Mahoning County dog warden's office is investigating an area of Youngstown's east side that is being used as a dumping ground for dead dogs.

The problem was brought to the attention of 21 News by a post in a social media group from a woman who said she'd found two dead dogs wrapped in plastic bags and duct tape in the last ten months in the area of Blaine Avenue and Old McCartney Road.

Tracy Myers said she first discovered a dead brindle pit in that area about ten months ago and has recently noticed another one lying near a stop sign in the same area.

"I don't know what they've died of, but it's in the same spot. Like they just stopped at the stop sign, opened the door, and threw it out," Myers said.

21 News reached out to Deputy dog warden Dave Nelson about the problem, who went out on Thursday afternoon to check it out.

When he got there, he discovered not one, but at least three dead dogs in bags that had been left behind.

"It's been known for this kind of thing. We try to make a pass by here pretty regularly," Nelson said.

Nelson said in some cases, people will drop dogs off who have some illness, such as Parvo, but that his office will investigate to make sure it's not related to anything criminal, such as dogfighting.

"Could it be that they got sick and passed on? You don't know until you gather up enough evidence," Nelson said.

Nelson said the area is remote, so it's easy for people to get away with leaving the animals behind.

"It's a little bit of a dumping ground. You can go months without anything and then all of a sudden, people are pulling up, you're in this area where there's a lot of traffic, but there's no buildings as far as that goes, people come, and they dump," Nelson said.
