GUSTAVUS TWP., Ohio - Just south of Routes 193 and 87 lies the legacy two brothers from Gustavus are hoping to leave their community.

"This came to be by a group in the Gustavus area that are highly invested in their community," says Dr. Michael Slyk.

Two brothers with a family business - Robert and Dean Miller - have poured $4 million into the Legacy Assisted Living Community.
Dr. Slyk is helping them make their dream of giving back to an aging and under-served population a reality.

"They find themselves in a bind when they don't have these resources available, they export their elderly. So as a result, they see family members leaving their immediate community where they've spent their entire lives," Slyk said.

"There are only about six nursing homes in that area in a 10-mile radius and one assisted living," says Theresa Knapik, assistant director of the long term care ombudsman at Direction Home of Eastern Ohio.

"The aging population is obviously going up and so there is a need to have an additional facility in the under-served areas, the non-urban areas," Knapik said.

The facility will look like one you'd find in a much larger area, Dr. Slyk says, with all the amenities and resources seniors will need.

"Common areas, activities, transportation, healthcare services, senior services."

Along with the Millers, Slyk is hoping the huge investment will leave a legacy that lasts, not just in Trumbull County, but across the region.

"It's going to be a center of the community where there's going to be other resources that become available."

The Millers and Dr. Slyk say the facility should be open by May or June.
